Where Our Silk Comes From

🌏 Sourced from India, China and Thailand

We source our silk from India and China - the two largest silk-producing countries in the world, together accounting for over 90% of global silk output. Indian silk from Karnataka (the home of Mysore silk) and West Bengal is known for its rich natural lustre and beautiful drape. Chinese silk from Zhejiang province is prized for its fine, even weave and smooth finish. We also source from Thailand depending on the fabric type. Every fabric is quality-checked before it reaches our store and website.

What types of silk fabric do you sell? ⌄
We stock Printed Silk, Silk Chiffon and Georgette, and Plain Silk including Silk Satin and Silk Crepe. All fabrics are sold by the metre with no minimum order and ship Australia-wide in 3-8 business days.
What is the difference between silk chiffon and georgette? ⌄
Silk chiffon is sheer and very lightweight with a smooth, delicate drape. Georgette is also sheer but made from tightly twisted yarns giving it a slightly crinkled, matte texture with more body. Both are floaty and great for overlays and sleeves - georgette is slightly easier to handle under the needle.
Where does Super Cheap Fabrics source its silk from? ⌄
We source silk primarily from India and China - together responsible for over 90% of global silk production. Yes - all silk fabrics are sold by the metre with no minimum. Buy 0.5m to test or several metres for a full garment. We ship Australia-wide in 3-8 business days, or visit us in-store at 153 Sackville Street, Collingwood VIC - 5 minutes from Melbourne CBD.
Is silk fabric suitable for beginners? ⌄
Plain silk satin and silk crepe are manageable for confident beginners. Chiffon and georgette need more care - use a fine needle (70/10), pattern weights instead of pins, and cut on a non-slip surface. If you're new to silk, start with a heavier plain silk before moving to sheers.
